George Drakoulias helped shape the early days of Def Jam Records with Rick Rubin, discovering acts like the Beastie Boys and LL Cool J. As a producer and A&R executive, George signed and produced artists including The Black Crowes, The Jayhawks, Wu-Tang Clan, Tom Petty, Dan Penn, Ride, Screaming Trees, and Primal Scream.
Drakoulias began his work in music supervision in 2001 with Zoolander starring Ben Stiller. He has contributed to more than 50 films and tv series including Zodiac, Lost, Margot at the Wedding, Starsky & Hutch, Greenberg, Crazy Stupid Love, Frances Ha, Star Trek Into Darkness, The Intern, The Hangover, The Hangover 2 & 3, Joker, Marriage Story, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Ad Astra, The Batman, Super 8, White Noise, Ghost, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Never Let Me Go, Mistress America, Barbie, Palm Royale, Joker: Folie à Deux, and Severance.
George’s cultural impact has sparked references across film and music: Billy Bob Thornton’s “Big George Drakoulias” in Dead Man, a Star Trek alien predator named the Drakoulias, to Oseary Drakoulias in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and a name-check from The Beastie Boys on Paul’s Boutique track “B-Boy Bouillabaisse.”
